Kitchen Remodel Plumbing

The plumbing in a kitchen remodel is two short visits. Getting them in the right places in the schedule is the whole trick.

Drain, waste, and vent piping roughed in through open framing
Rough-in before close-up

Kitchen work means supply and drain for the sink, connections for a dishwasher and often a disposal, sometimes a pot filler or a refrigerator line, and occasionally moving the sink to a different wall — which is where the project gets genuinely more complex.

Relocating a sink means moving the drain, and the drain needs both a route and a fall. In an older house on a raised foundation that is often straightforward from below; on a slab it is a much bigger conversation. We will tell you which situation your kitchen is in before the layout is finalised, because it can change the design economics substantially.

The rest is sequencing. Rough-in before the walls close, final connections after cabinets and counters. Miss the rough-in window and everything behind us waits, which is why we book those dates against your other trades rather than promising a slot we will move.

What drives the number

We quote after diagnosis, not before. These move the number most:

  • RELOCATIONKeeping the sink where it is versus moving it.
  • FOUNDATIONRaised foundation or slab, which changes drain routing entirely.
  • FIXTURESDishwasher, disposal, pot filler, refrigerator line.

Peninsula note

A useful early question in an older Monterey house: raised foundation or slab. On a raised foundation, moving a kitchen sink is usually a manageable job from the crawlspace. On a slab it means breaking concrete, and knowing that before the designer draws the island can save a great deal.

Process

What the visit involves

Check the layout early

Before the design is fixed. Where the drain can go affects what the kitchen can be.

Disconnect at demolition

So the other trades are not waiting on us.

Rough in before close-up

Supply, drain, and vent set and tested while the walls are open.

Return for final connections

After cabinets and counters, coordinated with your installer.

FAQ

Questions about this service

Can I move the sink to the island?

Sometimes, and the answer depends on your foundation and drain route. On a raised foundation it is often straightforward. On a slab it means breaking concrete for both drain and vent. Ask us before the layout is final, not after.

How many visits does the plumbing take?

Usually two, sometimes three: disconnection at demolition, rough-in before close-up, and final connections after counters. We coordinate those with your contractor so the project does not stall waiting on us.

What if you find bad pipe behind the cabinets?

We stop and show you. Old shutoffs that will not close and corroded supply lines are common finds in older kitchens here, and while the wall is open is the cheapest moment to address them. You get the finding and a price, not a surprise.
