Hot Water Recirculation Systems
A long wait for hot water is a distance problem. Replacing the heater does not shorten the pipe.
If hot water takes a long time to reach a far bathroom, the water heater is usually working fine. The delay is the volume of cooled water sitting in the pipe between the heater and the tap, and it is a function of distance and pipe size rather than heater capacity.
A recirculation system addresses it by keeping hot water moving through the loop so it is already close to the fixture. There are several approaches — a dedicated return line, a pump using the cold line as a return, timer or demand control — and they differ in cost, in how much they can be retrofitted, and in how much energy they use.
We will be honest about the trade-off, because it is real. Continuously circulating hot water uses energy and can increase heat loss from the pipe. Timer and on-demand control mitigate that considerably. If your only complaint is one rarely used fixture, the honest answer is sometimes that it is not worth the system.

Peninsula note
Older Peninsula houses that have been extended over the years often have a heater in its original location and a bathroom added a long way from it. That combination is the most common cause of the hot water delay we get called about here, and it is fixed by addressing distribution rather than equipment.

Questions about this service
Will a bigger water heater fix the wait?
No, and this is the most common misdirected purchase in this category. Capacity affects how much hot water you have, not how long it takes to travel the pipe. If the delay is your complaint, a larger heater changes nothing.
Does recirculation waste energy?
Continuous circulation does have an energy cost, because you are keeping water hot in the pipe. Timer and on-demand controls reduce that substantially by only running when hot water is actually wanted. We would recommend one of those rather than a continuously running loop.
Can it be retrofitted?
Often yes. A dedicated return line is ideal but needs a route. Where that is not feasible, a pump using the cold line as a return can work, with some trade-offs we will explain. Which applies depends on your layout.
